Top Questions Answered

  1. What inspired you to become an advocate for nurses?

With 24 years of nursing experience, including 22 years at the bedside, I’ve seen the challenges nurses face daily. From ICU to ER, travel nursing, and more, I’ve walked in your shoes. This journey has fueled my passion for supporting nurses, ensuring they feel educated, empowered, and confident in their roles.

  2. How can nurses protect their licenses?

Education is your best defense. Always chart meticulously, know your scope of practice, and stay updated on Board of Nursing (BON) policies. If you ever receive a letter from the BON, don’t panic! Reach out to someone who can guide you through the process (hint: that’s what I’m here for).

  3. What is the most common mistake nurses make?

Nurses often underestimate the importance of documentation. Remember, “If it wasn’t documented, it wasn’t done.” Take your time to ensure your notes are clear, thorough, and accurate.

  4. How do you handle stress and burnout as a nurse?

Self-care is non-negotiable. I shared practical tips, such as setting boundaries, finding a supportive community (like our Facebook group!), and seeking help when you need it. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Key Takeaways

  • Always ask questions and seek clarity when you’re unsure.

  • Advocate for yourself and your patients. Your voice matters.

  • Collaboration and continuous learning are vital for career growth.

  • Never ignore a BON letter—act promptly and seek guidance.

"Nurse Advocate Maggie is a wealth of knowledge. I had worked with her in the ICU years ago and hadn't realized that she was working in this capacity now. I started bouncing ideas off of her when I was being investigated by the BON and low and behold she was able to help to assist me and my lawyer with the most up to date unbiased and evidence based knowledge. Everything we discussed was direct, succinct, and relevant to my investigation. I am thankful for Maggie's expertise. She set me at ease in a very stressful time in my life. Thank you Maggie."
