NURSES ..... Petition your state legislators

Updated: Oct 15, 2023

Nurses as a whole do not spend enough time petitioning our leaders and holding them accountable for making real change that directly affects our ability to provide care. We are too busy saving lives and assuming that our leaders will do the right thing and protect not only us but patients.... but this is just not happening. It is time that nurses across the nation STAND IN their representatives office and demand better for nursing (#NURSE, #rn, #DNP, #FNP) which essentially creates better outcomes for patients.

As nurses (#RNFACT) we are not given a seat at the table like physicians when it comes to creating policy that affects our discipline. There are far more physicians in office than nurses and that has to change! We not only need to educate our legislators but we also need to run for office. Lawmakers do not understand our discipline and why it is our duty to educate them. They work for us and they sit in our house!

WHO REPRESENTS ME?

First start with who represent you in your state. Just google it. You are usually brought to a screen that allows you to type in your home address and after you type that it will produce some names of who holds office on varies federal, state and local office. CONTACT ALL OF THEM! Email, twitter, Facebook, Instagram all of them! Ask them what they are working on for nurses there bills out there for example like safe staffing ask if they are supporting these bills. Find out if there are nurses and physicians who hold office and reach out to them and again see what bills they are championing for nurses like safe staffing and or pay. You can google healthcare and or nursing bills in your state and see which representatives are sponsoring any of them. Let this guide your vote as we need leaders that are willing to protect our profession.

It's time for nurses to take an active role in advocating for our profession. This is going to take lots of effort in every state and nurses collaborating on a level not seen in history but it's way over due. It's time for nurses to take the bull by the horns and demand a seat at the table so decisions about our environments and our profession are not left to those who have no idea what we do and sacrifice day in and day out as "just a nurse." It's TIME WE PETITION OUR REPRESENTATIVES!
